Panama City, FL -The City of Panama City is proud to announce that Harrison Avenue in historic downtown Panama City has been selected as one of four finalists for the 2026 Great Places in Florida People’s Choice Award, presented by the American Planning Association Florida (APA Florida).

This year’s award theme, “Great People-Focused Places,” celebrates public spaces that foster connection, care, and community identity — places that tell stories, honor culture, and create a sense of belonging.

Harrison Avenue is the Main Street of Panama City’s historic downtown and has been central to the community since the early 1900s. The historic downtown corridor extends approximately 0.48 miles from E. 6th Street/Business Highway 98 to Government Street along St. Andrews Bay.

The avenue’s historic architecture, strong connections between buildings and the street, waterfront access, and role as a gathering place have long made it a people-focused destination. Following Hurricane Michael, revitalization efforts strengthened these qualities by focusing on resilience, connectivity, sustainability, downtown activity, and placemaking.

“Harrison Avenue represents the heart of our historic downtown and the resilience and community spirit of Panama City,” said City Manager Jonathan Hayes. “We are honored to have this important part of our community recognized as a finalist and encourage everyone to vote and help celebrate Harrison Avenue.”

The winner will be announced by APA Florida on Thursday, October 1, 2026.
